How brutal was his tackle on Aaron Young!

I critiqued him a week or so ago and my only small knock on him was his tackling technique. I applaud his desire to tackle but he needs to rid himself of the "sling" - no matter how innocuous a sling tackle may be , if the opponent bumps his head on the ground, you are looking at a suspension. His tackle was borderline.

on a positive note, he does not look at all out of place in the heat of the centre square.

Is Kennedy still eligible? What are the criteria?

Excellent debut

that is his natural game looking at youtube clips

hunt the ball and move it forward

regardless of hapless obstacles...

You're in the Clayton Oliver thread.

No harm in more than one nominee for Rising Star.

Why no Harmes?  Multiple nominations

(cough) Petracca (cough)

Finds the ball beautifully in traffic, has great game sense and his vision & decision making look to be top shelf.

Looks like we've got another one right.

edit: and by the way he was up against some serious opposition in the middle, looked at home...

I thought he looked good, although I'm not getting as excited as others by this performance.  He isn't a lock for Round 1 at all as I believe once Jones, Vince and a fit Brayshaw return he may be squeezed out.  Kennedy and Bugg showed that they will be handy additions as well so I believe Oliver may have to wait for his chance, although that's not a bad thing.

Liked his composure though and he showed signs that he will be a very handy player for us sooner rather than later.

From the young man himself:

“We were down by five goals and then we really turned it on and then we just kept going,” he said.

“I just loved it. I loved going in for the ball. I hunted it and loved the contest. It was my sort of game.  “It was awesome.”

Just have to love him, don't you.

The dark days are over for the MFC.  Really, Paul Roos should have been paid more. Hes completely overhauled our drafting and development.  If it was 5 years ago wed have taken Parish over Oliver.

Nah, Parish wins his own footy, we'd have taken some outside player with a contested % of 20 like Toumpas

lol - love your optimism, ron. keep it up.

As I said in the other thread, it was strange seeing a gun in Jordie's body (including jumper number - are the club taking the piss or what?) - and I say that as a former Jordie fan.  Oliver is probably bigger though, I was surprised at the size of him.  I did a similar double-take as I did when I saw vandenBerg for the first time last year.  He definitely looks physically strong enough and good enough to play round 1, with the question of fit enough to be answered over the remainder of the pre-season.  Exciting times.

I always saw a gun in Jordie's body Nash!

You've gotta love this kids attitude and comments after his first game.  Not only is he a Jordie look alike but from the sound of that interview his attitude and personality are very Jordie like as well.  Jordie's paved the way, now it's time for Ollie to take advantage!

Unlike Jordie, you want the ball in Oliver's hands.

That sweeping handball on the wing to the player in space epitomises his composure and footy smarts.

He's a different type of player, but he'll be as good as Brayshaw.

Gawn, Brayshaw, Oliver, Viney, Salem, vandenBerg, Tyson, Petracca will be a formidable group in years to come.

Look, I reckon we are past the stage of needing to highlight Jordie's deficiencies.  Of course Oliver is a (several) classes above in terms of skill but the reality is if he can get the best out of himself the way Jordie did there is soo much to like.  And his interview suggests to me he will.

Frankly from what I've seen I like Oliver more at this stage of his career than of Brayshaw at the same stage - and I reckon Brayshaw is/will be a gun.

Oliver has flown under the radar this preseason but I think the radar will pick him up soon.

Others brought him up.

It's hard not to - they look so alike.  BB is right though - time to move past it.

His handpass technique looks similar to McKenzie's too (albeit more effective).

Outside of skin complexion and hair color they look nothing alike...
